So You Want to Do a Boudoir Shoot?

Hello lovelies! I wanted to share with you a fantastic read on doing a boudoir session.

info sourced from:

So you want to do a boudoir shoot? Here are 10 things you should consider in preparation for yours!

{Hair} Don’t do it yourself. Have it done by a professional hair stylist. Even if you just go for a blowout or an enhanced look of what you do on a daily basis. Go! Of course, that isn’t to say you can’t go for a truly sexy up-do either. My personal favorite is the flirty waves everyone’s sporting these days. They’re super sexy and perfect for a boudoir shoot! You could also try for bed head – the sexy kind, not the messy unkempt kind. There’s a difference.

{Makeup} Don’t do it yourself. Trust me, I speak from experience. I had head shots done not too long ago – I did my own makeup the first day and had it done professionally the second. The difference was remarkable. You couldn’t even tell I was wearing makeup the first day! And while I thought the makeup artist had gone overboard when I looked in the mirror, it couldn’t have looked better in the photographs. Trust the makeup artist to enhance the beauty that’s already there. And while you’re at it – have some fun with it! Do something you haven’t tried before. It was the first time I’d ever done a smoky eye because I thought I couldn’t pull it off. Turns out I can and now I do it all the time!

*Check with your photographer to see if he/she has a makeup artist contact. If not, places like Sephora, Bare Escentuals and MAC do makeup applications. So do some salons as well as regular makeup counters in the mall. Little things to keep in mind.

{Nails} Pamper yourself. Get them done. There’s nothing prettier than a pop of color or pretty sheen on your fingers and toes. My personal favorites include a dainty French, pretty pops of bright red, or sultry deep reds or wine colors. You have an entire rainbow of colors to choose from – go wild! You’ll be happy that you did! Not-so-pretty nails are just – well, not very pretty. (P.S. If you do a killer job on your own nails, power to you! Do it up and save a couple bucks!)

{Shoes} Depending on the location of your boudoir shoot, shoes may or may not come into play. (But under no circumstance, should the house slippers come out to play.) In all honesty, there’s just something so incredibly sexy about a pair of high heels – especially where there’s lingerie involved. Am I right or am I right

{Attire} The question that plagues many a woman’s mind upon going into her boudoir session… What the heck do I wear? Ladies, the possibilities are endless. Victoria’s Secret or any other specialty store will be filled to the brim with them. The best part of these endless possibilities? You simply cannot go wrong. There are corsets and baby dolls, slips and teddies, bras, panties, and hot pants galore! But before you go running to the mall… check your closet, including your man’s side of it. Did you know that something as simple as a tank top and pair of panties can be as sexy as a corset and garters? They can! And I’ll bet you have some in your drawers at home. While you’re at it, why not try on one of your man’s button-down shirts or his favorite sports jersey? Because what man wouldn’t love that?

{Accessories} When I say accessories, I don’t mean go hog-wild with them. Remember, less is more. Strands of pearls or something sparkly will be just the ticket. Speaking of sparkly, if you’re doing the shoot as a gift for your hubby or soon-to-be-so, don’t forget to put the sparkler he gave you on full display.

{Poses} Another question that plagues many minds… How will I pose? This is your time to shine! Let your inner pin-up girl or Victoria’s Secret angel come out to play! Never fear though, your photographer will be there every step of the way to help you with poses that will accentuate you in a positive, breathtaking light. Still nervous? At the end of the day, remember this: chin up, shoulders back, chest out. 😉

{Breathe} Yes, when you are going into your boudoir session (whether it’s your first or your fifth) remember to breathe. Of course, it’s going to be nerve-wracking, stripping down in front of a complete stranger. But remember he/she is a professional and is going to help make you look fabulous (whether for you or for someone special). Holding your breath isn’t going to do you any good or help you in any way, in fact, you’ll look scared and stiff. Relax, breathe, let your hair down. This is supposed to be fun, remember?

{Champagne} While I have not yet done my own boudoir shoot (though I plan to), I highly recommend a bottle of champagne. No, not the whole bottle, but a glass or two certainly couldn’t hurt. In fact, many photographers provide such sustenance at your shoot. A little bubbly should help you relax and feel just a little giggly. Giggly is good, go with it.

{Photographer} So you want to do a boudoir shoot? The first thing you’re going to want to do (which probably means this should have been at the top of the list, but oh well) is choose a photographer. I highly recommend doing your homework on this one. Search around for photographers in your area who do boudoir. Look for someone experienced (while I’m all for theeveryone-has-to-start-somewhere adage, I don’t recommend it for this). You want to be 100% comfortable with your photographer. You want to feel safe in their hands and in front of their lens. Talk with them, explain your fears and nerves, allow them to soothe your woes.

One last thing, price. You’ll want to choose a photographer within your price range. And don’t forget the goodies you can purchase post-shoot. Mini albums, playing cards and more! They’ll make for great gifts on special occasions or sassy in-the-moment moments. 😉
